Is therapy worth it?

I believe it’s absolutely worth it, but I realise that's easy for a therapist to say. Let me explain why.
Therapy does two things. First, it gives you dedicated time and space with someone who is truly listening, without judgement, and without any agenda other than helping you find your own answers. It's a chance to really pause and get things off your chest.

Second, it gives you the space and guidance to consider the life experiences that have shaped you, to assess where you are today, and start to build a life with more emotional safety and connection.
Many of my clients come to me feeling like they’ve already tried everything else. They might have talked to friends, read self-help books, or pushed through, hoping things would get better if they just tried harder.

Therapy works differently because it goes deeper, helping you uncover patterns and solutions that have often been there all along, but you haven’t been able to see.
Real understanding is huge for making deep and sustainable changes.

Question 2

What happens in a session, and is it confidential?

Every session is a little different, because we’ll go where you need to go, as opposed to following a fixed script. We might explore something that's been weighing on you that week, dig into a pattern you keep finding yourself in, or work through something that goes further back. I'll listen, ask curious questions, and gently challenge when it feels useful. My job isn't to tell you what to do. It's to help you find your own answers. You stay in the driver’s seat throughout.

As for confidentiality, yes, everything you share stays between us. That's fundamental to how therapy works. Knowing that what you say won't go any further is what allows you to speak openly, without worrying about how it might land in your personal or professional life.

There are a small number of exceptions to this. If I became seriously worried that you, or someone else, was in immediate danger, I might need to contact someone. Similarly, if information came to light about serious crimes, such as terrorism or child protection concerns, I would have a legal duty to act. These situations are very rare, but it's important you know about them.

Outside of these circumstances, what you share in our sessions is completely private.

Do you work with my specific issue?

I'm trained to work with a wide range of challenges, and I tailor my approach to fit you, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method.

I work with individuals on everything from anxiety, depression, and stress to bereavement, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, anger, and life transitions. I also have specialist training in relationship and sex therapy, so I'm well placed to support couples with relationship challenges, sex, and intimacy.

I also work with individuals who are in relationships, but their partner isn’t ready for therapy. As well as those who are not in a relationship and want to explore their relationship patterns.

So, yes, in short, I can help with most things, but if you're not sure, just ask. I offer a free 15-minute call where you can tell me a little about what's going on, and I can let you know whether I think I'm the right fit for you. There's no commitment involved. It's simply a chance to get a feel for each other before deciding whether to take the next step.

How do you work?

My approach is integrative, which means I draw on a range of therapeutic methods rather than just one. In practice, this means I can adapt how I work to suit you and what you bring to our sessions.
Depending on what feels most useful, I might draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help you identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns. Or we might work in a more exploratory way, understanding how earlier experiences are showing up in your life today.

I've completed specialised training in couples work and sex therapy, so I can help with patterns of relating and sexual intimacy. I’m also a qualified neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) life coach, which brings a practical, solutions-focused dimension to the work when that's what's needed.

What stays consistent, regardless of the approach, is the relationship between us. I'll listen carefully, ask questions to help open things up, and challenge gently when it feels right. I won't tell you what to do or give you advice. The goal is to help you find your own answers. In my experience, the solutions are often already there; sometimes we just need a little help to see them.

Question 5

How long do you see people for?

The honest answer is that it depends. Some people come for a focused piece of work and feel ready to move on after a handful of sessions. Others find that longer-term therapy gives them the space to explore things more deeply.

In our initial call, we'll talk about what you're hoping to get out of therapy, and I'll give you my honest sense of what I think is realistic. Either way, there's no fixed endpoint, and no minimum number of sessions. We’ll talk at the start about where you want to get to, and review as we go. 
That said, I do ask for a week's notice if you decide to cancel. This is so that we can make the best use of our time together and end things properly when the time comes.

It’s also important that we meet weekly at a time and day you can commit to. Consistency matters in therapy because it means we can build momentum. If you only come sporadically, it rarely works. Of course, things happen, and there will be occasions where we might need to move things around. But on the whole, it helps hugely if we can stick to a routine.
